Eisenhower High School Practice Gym to be Renamed for Ida Brooks


Decatur- There will a naming ceremony coming up for a special woman and educator in Decatur.  On Saturday December 3rd, The practice gym at Eisenhower High School will be named after Ida Brooks.  The ceremony will begin at 2 after the EHS Girls Basketball game. 

Brooks died in February of 2015, but her legacy remains.  A Decatur educator and coach she was a pillar in the Decatur community.  Her 35-year career with Decatur Public Schools began at Centennial Junior High in 1966. She also taught at Johns Hill before going to Eisenhower High School in 1974, where she coached girls’ basketball and boys’ soccer.

Ms. Brooks coached the lady Panthers for 20 years. Specifically, during the 10-year span from 1976-1986, Brooks’ teams won three regionals, once sectional and lost in the super-sectional once, with total wins of 145 games.

Ms. Brooks coached Eisenhower boys’ soccer for over 10 years. The Herald & Review went to name Ms. Brooks the Macon County Boys Soccer Coach of the Year in 1986, 1989, 1990 and 1994.

Ms. Brooks retired from Eisenhower in 2001, while receiving the Edna Mae Riggs School Health Award. After her retirement, Ms. Brooks continued working with students through a truancy reduction program. Ms. Brooks also continued to be honored through the NAACP and the Coalition of Neighborhood Organizations for her career and volunteerism.
