SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Transportation is inviting Springfield residents to attend a public hearing on December 8 regarding improvements planned for the Third Street railroad corridor.

The hearing will be held at 700 East Adams Street in Springfield, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  Attendees will be able to learn more about the proposed improvements, speak with IDOT officials, and provide comments for the public record.

IDOT officials say the improvements are part of a larger plan to upgrade current rail service between St. Louis and Chicago.  Under the plan, the improvements proposed include:

- Upgrading railroad and pedestrian crossings
- Installing crossing signals
- Gates and fencing
- Improving the train station
- Closing five of the existing at-grade railroad crossings to vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle traffic

If you are unable to attend this meeting, but still wish to comment on the improvements, you can call (855) 436-8477 or click here.
