Arrest made in shooting of pregnant woman

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Police in Springfield have arrested a suspect in connection to shooting that killed a pregnant woman.

Police say they, along with the United States Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force, arrested 23-year-old Derrick D. Hayes. Hayes was arrested on charges of first degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Hayes was arrested for the shooting death of Sheena Malone from May 30. Police say Malone was not the intended target of the shooting. Hayes has no known affiliation with either group.

Malone was 23 weeks pregnant at the time of the shooting. The child was delivered during an emergency C-section and remained in the NICU.

The investigation remains open and anyone with additional details is urged to contact police at 788-8311 or Crime Stoppers at 788-8427.
