Increased police presence at Springfield Juneteenth celebration

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Visitors to Springfield's Annual Juneteenth Celebration in Comer Cox Park this weekend will notice a heavier police presence than in previous years.

Springfield Police and Springfield Park District Police officers say they will be present at Comer Cox Park during the two-day celebration in response to the recent uptick in violence in Springfield.  Officials say the increased presence is to ensure the public's safety, so that attendees can focus on the celebration.

Juneteenth in Springfield will feature games, live music, performances, and more from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
