MACON, Ill. (WAND) – A Macon man is accused of trying to touch a teen while she slept.

Police say the 14-year-old was staying over at her friend’s grandparents’ house when a 22-year-old man entered the room in the middle of the night. They say Joshua Whitaker, who was staying in the house, reached down the teen's shorts two times, then tried to hide when she woke up.

The friend’s mother was sleeping in the same room. She yelled at Whitaker to leave the room after his second attempt to touch the teen. At about 5 a.m. Saturday morning, she sent her mother a text message asking for a ride home.

Police arrested Whitaker just before noon Saturday. Officers say he became upset and banged his head around in the back of the squad car, threatening to kill himself.

He’s now sitting in the Macon County jail and facing aggravated sexual abuse charges.  His bond is set at $75,000.
