Latham restaurant rebuilding

Posted: Updated:

LATHAM, Ill. (WAND) - A restaurant devastated by a fire in February is looking to reopen soon.

The cause of the fire that destroyed Korner Cafe was never officially determined since the damage was so bad. Damages totaled more than $70,000.

The cafe that opened in the 1950s has always been family-owned. The current owner, Samantha Underwood has ran the restaurant for four years and renovated it just a year before the fire.

After the fire, there were concerns the Korner Cafe would not be able to reopen, but nearly five months later, Underwood is hopefully that she can open back up on July 1st.

A 50-year regular customer for the cafe says the restaurant is more than just a restaurant, it is a staple to the small town especially for the elderly.
