Weekend arson leaves behind interior damage

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – Firefighters are now calling a weekend house fire an arson.

Crews responded to the property, located in the 2000 block of North Woodford St. in Decatur, at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. They say flames caused nearly $3,000 of smoke and heat damage, limited to the inside of the house. It started in a corner bedroom.

Firefighters say a woman who was passing by noticed the fire and reported it. The house was empty when flames broke out.

The property's owner doesn't want to be identified.  He recently spent time working on improvements to its interior, according to Fire Inspector Mike Wigginton. Police say the fire is suspicious because utilities have not been plugged in for about a  year.

Wigginton says the fire is still under investigation Monday.
