Investigators: Fatal fire caused by smoking materials

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) -  Fire investigators with the Decatur Fire Department say the cause of a fatal fire on Tuesday night was caused by smoking materials.

62-year-old Jane Morthland died in her apartment at Oxford House on North Monroe around 5 p.m. The flames were quickly put out by firefighters.

Officials say an active fire was in the area where Morthland was located.

A report from Macon County Coroner Michael Day said Morthland's autopsy showed no signs of foul play and no indication of a traumatic injury.

Residents on the third floor were evacuated but were able to return to their homes once the smoke cleared.
