Closing of grocery "devastating"

Illiopolis, Ill (WAND) – After 46 years in business the Village of Illiopolis is losing its only full-service grocery store.

Johnson’s Market, a family operation, closed its doors on Tuesday.  A Dollar General recently opened and carries some food items.  But for residents of the town the nearest full-service store is in either Decatur or Springfield more than 20 miles away.

“A lot of people relied on that,” stated Illiopolis Mayor Sam Rogers who said it will be a hardship on senior citizens.  “Transportation wise they don’t drive that far.  It was devastating for the town.”

Rogers is hoping to find another grocery for his village, possibly along the lines of an Aldi.
