Community Christmas features food, entertainment

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – A community Christmas celebration brought in the new year on Thursday.

A crowd gathered at Homework Hangout Club on South Webster Street to take in some festive activities. The night included a free dinner and a community variety show.

Organizers of the celebration say it makes a difference for the entire community.

“We have so many people in our community who are low-income (or) unemployed,” said Brenda Major of Homework Hangout. “Our facility serves as a training center to help people learn the skills to become employed. While they’re in that transition, many of them don’t have a hot meal (and) certainly can’t even think about buying their kids Christmas presents. That’s why it’s important to us to give back to the community. We hope we’re starting a tradition so that the community looks forward to celebrating Christmas here with us.”

The night also featured an appearance from Santa Claus.
