University wants public input on Chief Illiniwek

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The University of Illinois is working to gauge public opinion on ideas generated by conversations on Chief Illiniwek and Native American imagery.

An on-campus event is scheduled Tuesday from 3 to 6 in the South Lounge of the Illini Union.

There will not be a formal program, but attendees can go over ideas suggested at an April 10 event and bring forward questions.

On April 10, Kevin Gover, director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, and UI alumnus and former Chief Illiniwek portrayer Dan Maloney spoke.

The event Tuesday is open to the public.
