Senate passes bills protecting Mahomet Aquifer


SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Illinois Senate passed legislation protecting the Mahomet Aquifer.

Legislation was introduced after after natural gas contamination to the aquifer, which is the primary source of drinking water for half a million people in Central Illinois.

It helps supply water for rural wells and is a backup water supply for Decatur.

One bill would lay out guidelines for how the public is notified about any potential contamination of the aquifer. The other bill would implement new inspection regulations.

The House will now consider the legislation.
