Neighbor helps put out Decatur flames

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – Firefighters responded to a fire at the back of a Decatur house.

Crews say the fire happened after 1:30 p.m. Friday in the 1200 block of E. Wood St. Flames started showing in the backyard of the house.

Firefighters say a neighbor, who is a family member to the person who lived at the house, came to help put out the fire.That person saw smoke coming from a covered patio canopy, which had netting on its sides and fabric on the top. That structure was the first thing to catch fire. 

Crews say smoke started to show from a bathroom window. They say the family acted quickly and started using a hose to put out the flames. 

The fire caused some smoke damage on the inside of the house. There were no injuries. Two dogs made it out of the house.
