Police collect unwanted meds

TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (WAND)- Police in Illinois and beyond collected unwanted medication Saturday as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

In Taylorville, police joined with community volunteers to collect medications outside Walgreens. By 10:30, they had already filled about five large boxes with unwanted medication.

We know prescription drugs (are) a problem with users, and we're trying to get that off the streets so it doesn't get into the hands of children or anything like that," said officer Nate Thompson.

Decatur police also took drop-offs of unwanted medication. The department reported fewer drop-offs, in part because they have a year-round drop box inside the police department building.

“Come in the main lobby doors, right there on your left, the green box … you put it in there and it gets disposed of correctly," explained officer Josh Whitney.

Police give medication collected to the DEA for safe disposal.
