6 vehicle pile-up leaves several seriously injured

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A six vehicle pile-up crash sent several people to the hospital with serious injures.

The crash happened around 5:30 Sunday evening on Interstate 55 northbound near mile marker 102 in Springfield.

Illinois State Police said 64-year-old Jimmie Cox of Park Hills, Mo. was driving a semi with box trailer northbound on I-55 at mile post 102. Traffic was backed up and stopped from a previous crash. Police said Cox failed to stop and hit the back of a second car, driven by a 47-year-old Huntley man with a woman and four kids inside.

The second car was then pushed into a third, fourth, and fifth car in the left lane.

The third car was driven by 48-year-old Julie Swanson of Des Plaines with a man, another woman, and one juvenile inside.

The fourth vehicle was driven by 27-year-old Colton Stoneburner of Pekin with a woman and two kids inside.

The fifth vehicle, a semi with box trailer, was driven by 57-year-old Jimmie Taylor of Elba, Al.

Officers said Cox swerved into the other lane to try and avoid vehicles, but hit the end of the sixth vehicle before coming to a stop on the right hand shoulder.

The sixth vehicle was driven by 21-year-old Tyler Parnell of Springfield with a woman, and child inside.

Police said multiple people were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries.

The investigation into the crash is pending.
