Coroner: Missing kayaker's body found in river

SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) - Investigators have positively identified a body found in the Sangamon River as that of a missing kayaker.

Sangamon County Chief Deputy Coroner Jim Allmon says search teams found 30-year-old Shane Shomidie in the river Tuesday. The MMA fighter first went missing on Saturday, April 21.

Allmon says a Tuesday autopsy showed no sign of trauma. He says further results require microscopic and toxicology studies to be finished.

Around 10:30 a.m. Springfield Park Police say they found the body after 10:30 a.m. in the river near the Interstate 55 bridge.

Officials say Shomidie was rescued Saturday night before heading back out on the river. According to the Springfield Park Police chief, Shomidie was rescued with several others when they had trouble moving down the river. The group was rescued but police say Shomidie's girlfriend asked him to go back out on the river with her so the two of them got back out on the river.

Sonar searches of the river were not successful due the river conditions. Park police tell WAND-TV they do not believe foul play was involved and called it "an unfortunate incident".

Two of the other kayakers were treated and released for hypothermia at a local hospital. Police say they questioned them about the disappearance of Shomidie.
