Sangamon Co. students reach Proud Penny Drive goal

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Sangamon County school children reached their goal of raising money to purchase a historic Abraham Lincoln document and return it to the state for the bicentennial celebration.

With the help from community partners, the students have raised more than $18,000 with their Proud Penny Drive. The goal was $15,000 to purchase the Minute Book of Sangamon County.

The Minute Book of Sangamon County from July 1835 to July 1838  includes information about some of Lincoln's first legal cases.

It will be donated to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

More than 60 schools contributed their pennies and change.

They also got help from the Sangamon County Bar Association and Staab Funeral Homes. Each presented a check equal to 100,000 pennies each to help.
