URBANA, Ill. – Fire crews say a cat died in an Urbana basement fire.

The News-Gazette reports firefighters needed only five minutes to get the fire in the 1200 block of Berkley Avenue under control. A neighbor used 911 to call firefighters to the scene.

The newspaper says crews saved two dogs, but a cat did not survive – even after firefighters performed CPR on it for up to 15 minutes. Crews did manage to rescue two dogs.

No people were hurt in the fire.

Firefighters initially saw flames coming from a basement window. A second neighbor helped put out a fire on plants in the house with a garden house before firefighters arrived.

The house is located between Oakland Avenue and Bailey Street and east of Crystal Lake Park.

Firefighters say a cause is unknown on Tuesday night. They’re also working to figure out where in the house the fire began.

WAND-TV will update this story as it learns more.
