Village of Elkhart gets grant for World War I monument

ELKHART, Ill. (WAND) - The Village of Elkhart Veterans' Park renovation project has been awarded a grant for World War I monuments that are in need of repair or conservation.

Veterans' Park is home to a WWI Doughboy statue that was presented to the Village by the returning veterans of World War I in honor of those who died fighting.

Plaques have been added to the statue with the names of Village veterans from WWII, the Korean War, and all veterans killed in action.

The grant is called the Landmarks Illinois World War I Monument Preservation Grant. To be awarded the grant, the Doughboy statue had to show architectural, historical, and cultural significance.

The grant program was launched in 2017 and made possible by support from the Pritzker Military Foundation.
