Police make arrest in arson investigation

URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - An Urbana man has been arrested and charged with starting a fire at an apartment complex.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the fire in the 800 block of East Kerr Ave. before 1 a.m. on May 2.

The fire had been intentionally set in the hallway just outside of an apartment door.

The fire caused damage to the immediate area, including lights on the ceiling that had melted from the heat and damage to the floor.

Firefighters found potential evidence related to the fire, including a bottle of charcoal lighter fluid just inside of a nearby apartment door.

Several victims who were interviewed said another occupant of the apartment building had a fight with them recently. The fire was found outside of their door.

30-year-old Travis James Vandiver was arrested with the help of the Rantoul Police Department. He was tentatively charged with aggravated arson.

The investigation on the incident is ongoing. Anyone with further information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 217-373-TIPS.
