Officers killed in the line of duty to be honored in ceremony

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A ceremony will be held Thursday morning to honor officers killed in the line of duty.

The annual Illinois Peace Officers Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Illinois Peace Officer Memorial sculpture on the Illinois State Capitol grounds in Springfield.

Six officers were killed in the line of duty in Illinois last year. Those six will have their names added to the memorial.

Two other officers who were confirmed to have died in the line of duty in the past but had not been officially added to the memorial will be recognized.

Squad cars from around the state lined up at the Illinois State Fairgrounds early Thursday morning. They then led a processional to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception for a memorial church service. The procession will then travel to the Capitol for the ceremony.

In the case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the Illinois State Library across the street from the Capitol.
