Founder of LifeLine Pilots recognized

SAVOY, Ill. (WAND) - A Savoy woman who founded the volunteer pilots organization LifeLine Pilots is being honored.

87-year-old Wanda Whitsitt founded the group of volunteer pilots who fly people for free to medical treatment using their own planes.

Whitsitt started the organization in 1981. The group has flown more than 8,000 missions and over 5 million miles.

Whitsitt will now be receiving an award from Angle Flight West in Los Angeles on Saturday for her dedication. She will receive the Endeavor award at an event in Los Angeles.

She stopped flying herself when she was 72, but continues to contribute to LifeLine Pilots. It is based out of the Peoria airport now.
