Former village treasurer facing fed charges

TOWER HILL, Ill. (WAND)- A former village treasurer now faces federal wire fraud charges on allegations she stole more than $150,000.

Police arrested Nancy Finley in late 2017, after investigators reported she stole money between May 2010 and December 2016. She faced theft charges in Shelby County.

According to a federal indictment filed Thursday, Finley stole $150,000 of sewer and water payments submitted to her, fraudulently adjusted the village’s billing system to hide the theft, made manual backups of those altered files, and wrongly reported her village computer crashed, causing a loss of water and sewer billing data in order to cover up the crime.

The indictment charges Finley with four counts of wire fraud: one relating to her alleged use of a software system based in New Mexico and two relating to allegations she deposited stolen money into bank accounts.
