Dead infant found in backpack; investigation underway

WHEATON, Ill. (WAND) – Someone found an infant’s body in a backpack, and deputies are working to figure out who is responsible.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says the black backpack was in a private drive close to Plamondon Road in Wheaton. Landscapers discovered the baby inside of it on Aug. 15, 2016, and turned their discovery over to investigators. The baby was believed to have been dead for less than a full day.

NCMEC says the backpack also had a brown bathmat and toiled seat cover in it. Photos of the backpack are attached to this story.

Investigators say pollen testing found everything in the backpack likely came from the southwest United States before coming to Illinois. They think it spent a “significant” period of time in northern Illinois.

The child, identified as Hispanic, had a medication for treating epileptic seizures in her blood. NCMEC says investigators think the mother had a condition and took the medication while pregnant.

DuPage County deputies and NCMEC want anyone with information to call NCMEC at 1-800-THE-LOST (843-5678).
