Volunteers needed for 'Stamp Out Hunger' food drive

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The National Association of Letter Carriers annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive is this weekend.

The Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, the country's largest single-day food drive, provides residents with an easy way to donate food to those in need. Each year millions of pounds of food is donated nationwide.

People are asked to put out cans or boxes of non-perishable food in bags next to their mail box on Saturday, May 12.  Letter carriers and volunteers will pick up those items throughout the day beginning at 8 a.m.

The timing is important, with food banks, pantries and shelters running low on donations from the winter holidays and with summer approaching, when most school meal programs are suspended.

The group says volunteers are needed to help letter carriers collect, sort and deliver the goods to local pantries.  Shifts will be from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.  Volunteers can help at three different locations - Nelson Park, Fairview Park and the NALC office (located at 2955 N. Woodford).  Contact Lloyd Holman at 217-620-4923 for more details.
