DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – Police say a man stole a gun from another man’s car in Decatur.

Officers say it happened after 11 a.m. on May 2 in the parking lot of Kroger (1401 W. King St.), when the car owner began working on a green truck parked next to his Ford. They say a man standing nearby, who had on a “distinctive” striped shirt, crouched down and opened the passenger side of the Ford, then put something in his waistband. Security video showed those actions, according to a sworn statement.

Police say the car owner realized his gun, a revolver valued at over $800, was gone when he left the parking lot. It was originally placed between the driver’s seat and center console in the car.

Police say the man in the striped shirt, who officers identified as 53-year-old Anthony Salmons, was working with the car owner on repairing the truck.

Salmons has convictions for burglary and dangerous drugs on his record, police say. He is facing several charges, including one for auto burglary and another for possession of a firearm by a felon.

His bond is set at $10,000 in Macon County.
