Construction underway for fallen troopers memorial

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A memorial park in downtown Springfield is planned to honor Illinois State Police troopers killed in the line of duty.

The park will be built along Lawrence Ave. between Sixth and Seventh streets.

The park is expected to cost about $2.5 million. That is being funded through donations police and the public. No taxpayer dollars are being used for it.

Work has already begun, with trees being removed. Construction will go through the summer. The hope is to have the project complete sometime in September.

The memorial will have a granite wall with the names of troopers killed on the job. The park will also have sculptures, a water feature, and landscaping.
