Large fire reduces Gilman building to rubble

GILMAN, Ill. (WAND) – Flames completely destroyed a Gilman house on Wednesday.

Mayor Rick Theesfeld says it happened at a brick building along West 2nd Street. Crews evacuated half of the 100 block of N. Central Ave. and all of the 200 block because of where wind was moving embers into nearby buildings.

"This is one of the by-far worst fires I've seen since I've been on," a four-year firefighter said. "The wind was relentless. It took (the building) really fast."

The fire seemed to leave the building in ashes.

Theesfeld says it was home to at least two people. It also had a wood storage area in it and used to be a lumberyard.

A child needed treatment for smoke inhalation and a firefighter had to deal with heat exhaustion. There were no other injuries.

The station is working to learn more about a cause and potential damage.

This story will be updated as WAND-TV learns more.
