Iles House to host annual Strawberry and Lawn Party


SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Elijah Iles House in Springfield will host its annual "Clara Irwin's Strawberry Party" on July 4.

The party will be on the lawn of the Iles House, 628 South Seventh St. from 5 to 8 p.m.

It recognizes Clara Irwin, the spouse of the house's second owner, who was known for her promotion of the horticultural arts in central Illinois and renown for the quality of her strawberries and her strawberry parties in the 1840s and '50s.

Guests will recite the Pledge of Allegiance at 5 p.m. followed by a musical performance by the popular Burr Oak String Band of Champaign-Urbana.

A historical program will be held from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m.

Children will be able to play 19th century games.

A wide variety of strawberry food will be sold, including strawberry shortcake, strawberry sundaes, strawberry slushies, and non-alcoholic strawberry daiquiris.

Guests are also invited to tour the interior of the Iles House before the party from noon to 4 p.m. with tours resuming during the party from 5 to 8 p.m.

Clara Irwin's Strawberry Party is open to the public and all are invited to attend. Free parking is available at the lot on the southeast corner of Seventh and Cook Streets.
