Future of Lincoln family interment books uncertain

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The future of the Lincoln family interment books is unknown as the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum has given notice it plans to end an agreement to keep them.

Aldermen approved a contract with the museum Tuesday to store the books in a temperature-controlled vault.

But two weeks ago, the museum sent the city a letter saying it planned to cancel the existing agreement to store the first interment book, which lists Abraham Lincoln's handwritten burial record.

When the letter was sent, an ordinance to establish a long-term contract was still stalled in committee.

Aldermen and Oak Ridge Cemetery board members wanted to take more time to go over the contract's language and ensure the books wouldn't revert to state ownership if a future city council didn't renew the contract.
