Man charged after Friday standoff


SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND)- The man authorities say was responsible for an hours-long standoff with law enforcement Friday now faces several felony charges.

On Friday, Sangamon County sheriff’s deputies responded to Central Point Road in Cantrall on reports of one man chasing another and shooting a gun. Deputies reported finding John Britz, 58, holding a gun and threatening to shoot law enforcement officers. After an hours-long standoff, Britz surrendered Friday afternoon.

Court records show that, on Thursday, authorities charged Britz with one count of being an armed habitual criminal, three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Britz previously served more than 20 years in prison for a 1979 murder.
