Effingham's Dan Winkler in national spotlight

ATLANTA -- The top setup man in the major leagues cut his teeth throwing at the corner of Temple and Engbring in Effingham.

At least that's the prevailing sentiment in baseball right now, as St. Anthony graduate Dan Winkler continues his breakout season with the Atlanta Braves. The reliever has a 2.34 ERA (1.31 if you wipe out a 4-run outing in late June). He's wiped out 44 batters in 34.2 innings of work, mostly with a baffling cutter that he's throwing more than ever (44.7 percent of pitches). His WHIP is a scalding 0.95. His fastball also shows signs of returning to its pre-injury states at 94 miles an hour. Super duper stat heads can also point to his eye-popping numbers when it comes to making opposing hitters miss the barrel of the bat.

Winkler's fame off the field is growing too, as evidenced by Sports Illustrated's long-form feature on his battle with elbow injuries and dominance post-recovery.

Up next the Effingham native will wait to hear if he's made the All-Star Game, which is July 17 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.
