Trial set for man accused of severely hurting baby

TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (WAND)- The man charged with assaulting his three-month-old son is now scheduled to go on trial Nov. 5, according to court records.

Chad Johnson, 30, was charged with aggravated battery of a child and violating a protective order. Johnson is accused of using his hand to hurt the infant, leaving a skull fracture, brain bleeding, bruises and other injuries, according to charging documents.

Emergency crews had responded to reports the child was unresponsive and transported the child to HSHS St. John’s Hospital. Police tell WAND that, as of a check Wednesday, the child’s medical condition had not changed, and the child remained at St. John’s Hospital. WAND was unable to confirm with the hospital Thursday that the child is still there.

Johnson was in court in Christian County Thursday. Johnson’s defense demanded a jury trial, which is now scheduled for Nov. 5, according to online court records. A motion to reduce Johnson’s $750,000 bond was continued.

Taylorville Police are still working with Illinois State Police to collect information and conduct interviews in the case, according to Police Chief Brian Hile.
