Effingham Fire Chief announces his retirement


EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WAND) - The Chief of the Effingham Fire Department is retiring.

Chief Joseph Holomy submitted his notice to the City of Effingham on Friday, announcing his retirement will become effective at 4 p.m. Aug. 24.

Holomy's career in fire service began in 1976 when he started as a volunteer firefighter in northern Illinois.

He worked his way up the ranks and has been serving as Fire Chief in Effingham since 2004.

Chief Holomy was named Firefighter of the Year in 1992 and 2006 and has received numerous other awards throughout his career.

Congratulations to Chief Holomy, and thank you for your years of public service.
