Governor's Mansion grand re-opening set for Saturday

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – The grand re-opening of the Illinois Governor’s Mansion is Saturday.  A nearly $15 million project funded through private donations.

“We didn’t want the taxpayers to have to pay to fix it up.  But it had been neglected for decades, was falling apart, was in shambles and was an embarrassment and I was outraged when my wife and I moved in,” Governor Bruce Rauner, (R), told members of the American Legion at their annual convention.  “We gutted it and restored it.  My wife raised $14 million, not from taxpayers, all from private donations and now it’s beautiful and proud.”

The re-opening ceremony will include a ceremony Saturday morning and public tours of the mansion.  Work included repairing steps, installing a new roof and putting in a new HVAC system.

The mansion is built in 1955 and is the third oldest governor’s residence in the nation.
