Proposals sought for Safe Routes to School program

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Local proposals are needed for the Safe Routes to School program.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is looking for more ways to help children walk and bike to school safely.

The program is funded with federal money. It supports projects and activities that improve safety and help cut back on traffic around elementary and middle schools.

School districts, local governments, metropolitan planning organizations and nonprofit associations are encouraged to come forward with ideas on how to keep kids safe.

Applications will be accepted starting Sept. 24. The deadline is Nov. 19.
