Springfield park police looking into Iles Park vandalism

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - News of Iles Park's recent vandalism didn't sit well with its visitors.

It's the second time graffiti was spray painted on the park's tennis court. The graffiti is considered too obscene to showcase. Someone spray painted racial slurs, profanity and male genitals.

Police say the vandals did more than $5,000 in damages.

Springfield park police chief Limey Nargelenas said the people responsible may also face burglary charges. A construction site is near the park.

"They broke into a shed, took the paint out there and spray painted the park," Chief Nargelenas said, and added investigators identified some people of interest.

He believes juveniles are responsible. If and when someone is caught, the chief said the parents would be responsible in paying for the damages.
