HSHS St. Anthony's pushes back-to-school safety, health

EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WAND) - HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital is encouraging families to keep health and safety top priorities as the new school year starts.

The hospital reminds parents to make sure kids are up to date on all vaccinations and to get a physical.

Even if they are not mandated by the school, St. Anthony's said yearly physicals let health care providers monitor growth and development, update immunizations, and determine risks for sports participation.

The hospital also recommends parents talk to children about healthy food choices at home and at school.

Backpacks can cause injuries. So, they recommend choosing one with wide shoulder straps and to make sure your child uses both straps evenly across the back.  A backpack should never weigh more than 10-20 percent of your child's body weight.

Remind kids about proper hand washing, limit screen time to two hours or less each day, get enough sleep, and make sure kids wear seatbelts, St. Anthony's said.
