Crews stripping Burnham Mansion ahead of demolition

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Burnham Mansion will be demolished soon, but crews are currently stripping the interior detailing from the historic home.

The News Gazette reports the Peoria Architectural Salvage group is working to preserve some of the interior work.

Unit 4 Director of Capital Projects & Planning Elizabeth Stegmaier said the salvage work will be done by next week.

The last two phases of the project are having an abatement crew clear the building at 603 W. Church St. of hazardous materials and then bringing in a demolition crew in the fall.

The demolition is being done to make room for the $87.1 million Central High School expansion.
