Police: Drowning victim died while swimming after boat

CLINTON, Ill. (WAND) – A drowning victim in Clinton was swimming to get his boat when it happened, responders say.

Sgt. John Williamson of the Illinois Conservation Police tells WAND-TV that on Sept. 6, 63-year-old Peoria man Michael R. Dailey’s boat floated away as he tried to place it in the water at Clinton Lake’s Mascoutin Boat Ramp. The boat moved away too quickly for him to reach it, and he went underwater at close to 60 yards away from the shore.

Conservation police and the Cornbelt Fire Department Dive Team helped find Dailey’s body in the lake. Responders pronounced him dead at 1:40 p.m. Preliminary autopsy results showed he died from drowning.

Williamson says a woman in the boat ended up unharmed.
