Demolition set to begin at Champaign school

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Demolition is commencing soon at Dr. Howard Elementary School. Champaign Unit 4 district leaders are excited to see the new school finally start to show progress.

Leaders say they are finished with architectural salvage and are ready to start making some changes. Construction fencing will begin at the end of September to prepare for demolition. It will run through October, November and December, with a follow-up of construction in March of 2019.

"The project is moving steadily forward (and) we are (done) with architectural salvage in the interior of the building. We've completed hazardous material of the school and residential properties affected by the work. We expect to start construction fencing this week for demolition beginning at the end of September," says Capital Projects Manager Sandra Roesler.

A community information night will be held Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the new plans, designs and demolition. People will be able to see the plans up close and speak with the team behind the plan at 703 S. New Street in Champaign.
