1 dead, 3 children hospitalized in RT 45 crash


CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) - Illinois State Police say one person is dead and three children were in the hospitalized after a crash on Route 45 Thursday morning. 

The crash happened around 5:52 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Rt 45 near Leverett Road. 

According to ISP, a Dodge Ram Truck was traveling south when they struck a Grand Prix that was parked in the right driving lane, with an apparent mechanical issues. The driver of the car was outside of the vehicle when the truck struck the car. 

The car was thrown off the roadway and overturned in the right ditch. The truck also rolled and came to rest on its top in the left lane. At this time it's not clear if the truck or car hit the driver of the car. They were found in the right ditch along with the car. 

ISP said the driver, identified as 23-year-old Shana Outlaw, was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital by the Champaign County Coroner.  

Inside the car were three children, ages six, four and eight months. All were taken from the scene with non-life threatening injuries. 

According to the coroner, Outlaw died from multiple traumatic injuries. No autopsy will be performed. 

The driver of the truck was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. ISP and the Champaign County Coroner continue to investigate the crash.
