Crews to demo apartment damaged by fire

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) – Demolition has begun on an apartment building that was destroyed by fire.

Nearly 100 people were displaced when the fire broke out on April 27.  The building at 609 S. Randolph Street will be demoed over the next four to six weeks.

The property is heavily damaged and labeled as condemned by the city, as a fence now borders it. At least part of the roof caved in from the fire.It has been boarded up since the fire.

Luckily no one was injured in the fire.

Investigators say they were unable to determine a cause, but believe the fire was intentionally set.

Champaign Deputy Fire Marshal Randy Smith at the time said they had “nothing to go on” in terms of evidence. They struggled to find a source of ignition for the fire but will still accept tips on the case. Anyone with information should call the Champaign Fire Department at 217-403-7200.
