Workers see success in helping homeless

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND)- Representatives of non-profits and agencies gathered Thursday for the bi-monthly Homeless Council Continuum of Care Advisory Council meeting.

Workers are looking for ways to highlight their successes during awareness events later this year.

“We’re doing a really good job providing housing to those individuals who have what we call chronic homeless situations: they’ve been homeless a long period of time, at least a year straight or have been homeless at least four times in the past three years,” said Darsonya Switzer, program director for Homeward Bound.

Workers have a list of seven people who meet that description. Switzer said workers’ priority is finding those people housing.

“It’s definitely a housing-first approach,” Switzer said. “We provide the housing first and work on whatever issues they may have after housing is provided. Stabilization is the most important thing.”
