Statewide car seat safety checks being held

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - This week is National Child Passenger Safety Week.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is hosting statewide car seat checks through Sept. 29.

IDOT will host an event from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at 2300 S. Dirksen Parkway, in Springfield.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the American Academy of Pediatrics, a child should remain in their car seat or booster seat until they reach the top height or weight allowed by the car seat manufacturer.

Recent changes to Illinois law will require kids traveling in Illinois to remain rear-facing until age 2. This law will take effect Jan. 1, 2019.
