SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – A fire left a home with heavy damage in Springfield Thursday.

Firefighters say damage could be seen on the inside and outside of a house in the 200 block of South David Street. That address is close to an intersection with East Monroe Street.

Crews arrived at around 1 p.m. Thursday to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the windows. Chief Allen Reyne says firefighters went through an “aggressive” search in the house for occupants and discovered that nobody was home.

Some windows were blown out. Firefighters say the back of the building’s roof appeared to start sagging.

Crews say the Red Cross is helping the people who lived in that house with displacement relief. The fire remains under investigation Thursday evening.
