Four graduate from jail drug recovery program

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Four former Sangamon County jail inmates graduated Thursday from a year-old substance abuse treatment program operated by Gateway Foundation in partnership with the county.

The program, which launched in September 2017, includes support services as well as the drug Vivitrol which can reduce cravings in the treatment of opioid and alcohol abuse. So far, 15 people have graduate from the program, said clinical supervisor Tyrone Wilkins.

The program is supported by a two-year grant through the Illinois Department of Human Services, Wilkins said.

“I’m very thankful that this is available for the inmates,” Wilkins said. “There’s so many more out there that we haven’t been able to reach, and we have submitted to (Substance Use Prevention and Recovery) budgets to expand services to other counties.”

The program is only available to inmates whose offenses would qualify for probation, Wilkins said.
