New partnership aims to help Alzheimer's work

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND)- SIU Medicine’s Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders formally announced a partnership with Memorial Medical Center Friday.

The center at SIU serves patients around the state through a network of healthcare providers and through artistic, musical and physical programs. It also offers educational outreach and research resources.

The state budget crisis led to staff and service cuts, but the new partnership will help restore some of those efforts, said SIU Neuroscience Institute’s Executive Director Dr. James Gilchrist.

“With that new money, we can renew the memory and aging network,” Gilchrist said. “We can start paying them the payments they need to hire local coordinators to run their programs. We can provide them educational grants. We can do our own educational funding. We can start our autopsy and brain bank program.”

In June, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services approved a state plan under which Memorial Medical Center will receive $1.5 million per year to support and expand the center.
