DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – A suspect charged with running from a car crash and helping to steal from cars is in custody.

Police say they went to the scene of a hit-and-run crash after 5 a.m. Tuesday near South Side Drive and Taylorville Road, where they learned two men ran from the area. Officers then found and talked to owner of the car, which they described as a gold 2008 Chrysler 300, who said someone had stolen it. Police say the car was still at the crash scene when they arrived and had items from the owner’s house in it.

A worker at Decatur sludge pits (1100 S. Monroe St.) called police to his location at about 11:45 a.m. that day after seeing a man with only a pair of athletic shorts on waving his arms. Police say they talked to that person, who identified himself as 18-year-old Joshua Grant. Police say he changed his story several times before admitting he ran from the crash scene with a minor, who officers say he was working with to steal things from cars.

Police say Grant told them he was a lookout for the underage suspect as they looked at 19 cars. Police say the two of them at one point found keys to the Chrysler and took it before crashing it and running into a wooded area, falling down a hill and getting lost in the dark.

Grant is charged with burglary and theft of a motor vehicle. He is behind bars in the Macon County Jail.

Investigators tell WAND-TV they’re still looking for the minor on Wednesday night.
