Urbana superintendent admits to poor communication in discipline system rollout

URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - The superintendent of Urbana schools is admitting to poor communication during the rollout of the new discipline system.

Don Owen said he could have done a better job communicating throughout the process, the News Gazette reports.

However, he said the discipline system is working.

The district's change to "restorative practices" has been in the works for more than two years.

Changes made before the start of the school year have sparked a racial disparity in the number of out of school suspensions, officials said.
